Christmas is quickly approaching, and many of us eagerly look forward to gathering around the table with loved ones to share a feast. Yet, for some in our community, the holiday season brings uncertainty about where their next meal will come from. Hunger is a significant issue worldwide, but it also affects people right here in our own neighborhoods.

Fortunately, one organization in Saint Joseph is committed to fighting hunger locally by providing food for underprivileged families and individuals. Second Harvest Community Food Bank, located at 915 Douglas St, truly embodies the spirit of giving. Serving Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas, their mission to create a hunger-free community drives them to provide warm meals and essential nourishment to those in need. At Second Harvest, it’s about touching souls as much as it is about satisfying hunger. Their commitment to making a lasting impact speaks to their dedication to the community.

Hunger is an issue many of us may not see daily. We often take for granted the home-cooked dinner or peanut butter sandwich we enjoy without thinking about those who don’t have the means to afford such meals. The reality is, people all around us are struggling—some of them in the very neighborhoods we live in. Together, with outstanding organizations like Second Harvest, we can work to ensure that no one goes to bed hungry.

The work of Second Harvest Community Food Bank is a gift to our community, serving thousands of people in need. There are plenty of ways to get involved in the fight against hunger. Second Harvest is always accepting both donations and volunteers. So, this Christmas, consider the blessings you’ve received and what you might do to give back. The fight against hunger takes all of us.
